New Delhi CNN —Indian voters are battling sweltering conditions to take part in the world’s biggest election as a severe heat wave hits parts of the country and authorities forecast a hotter-than-normal summer for the South Asian nation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a heat wave will affect parts of south and east India until the end of the week, including four states that are voting on Friday. HONG KONG CNN —India is set to vote in the world’s largest ever general election, setting the stage for a mammoth exercise in democracy with nearly a billion people eligible to head to the polls across just over six weeks. Here is a look at how the world’s most populous country votes in the world’s largest democracy. The number of women registered to vote has increased by 40 million since the previous election in 2019, according to the election commission, while more than 20 million voters between ages 18-29 have been added to the electorate. New Delhi CNN —More than a dozen workers have been killed after a bridge under construction collapsed in northeast India Wednesday, the latest in a string of infrastructure failures that have resulted in multiple deaths in the country. The collapse of the bridge in the town of Sairang, Mizoram state, killed at least 17 people and injured several others, according to its chief minister, Zoramthanga, who goes by one name. “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram,” Modi wrote on X, offering a sum of nearly $2,500 to the next of kin of those killed and $600 to the injured workers. Last week, Beijing’s temperature soared above 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit), setting a new record for the capital’s hottest day in June. According to the country’s meteorological observatory, Beijing, Tianjin, Heibei, Shandong will “continue to be baked by high temperatures.”

Yadav, confirmed a surge in admissions at the main district hospital and said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of deaths. Brijesh Yadav, 28, said he rushed his 85-year-old grandfather to the hospital on Tuesday after he complained of difficulty in breathing. India has an average of five to six heatwave events annually over its northern parts between March and June and sometimes until July, according to the World Health Organization.
